Lava Fields

These images were made as part of an exploration of the landscape of the National Lava Fields Monument, on Modoc and Klamath land in Oregon. Using livestock bones and materials found in the neighboring ranches, we made ornamentations which echoed the names of various sites within the monument. Skull Cave is so named for the various ancient animal bones found deep within the cavern, which was a rare source of water in the relatively desolate surrounding landscape. Water found deep within the cave supported the people and animals who inhabited the region. The site also was one of the final strongholds of the Modoc people, who were forced from their homeland by the American Army in the late 1800’s.
