This series is a meditation on the spiral of ancestry and the infinity of time. Colonial histories, despite their ruptures and violence, hold a continuum through ancestral DNA. Made on the northern coast of the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Hebrides, these photographs signal a reunion for our mother to a place of her ancestry.
In the wake of the Jacobite Uprising, after the defeat of the Jacobites by the British at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, many Jacobites fled to the Caribbean. After the battle, the Scottish whisked Bonny Prince Charlie, whom they had hoped to place on the English throne, over the sea to Skye. For the countless people of Scottish descent in the Caribbean, the events on this battlefield and the fallout afterward shifted the history of their ancestral lineage, standing as a dam in the eternal stream of time.
Threads of ancestral history weave tightly from one generation to the next and reach broadly over the expanse of time and space, from one island to another. The loss of life and land in this place across the Atlantic began a gyre of loss, genesis, destruction, and recreation.
